FG College Times: My DM Wish list as a player
So, as a rather new player, I don’t have a lot of experiences with a variety of DMs, but I know the traits that I enjoy in a DM and have compiled a short list of DMs that I would love to join a
Some of the traits that I believe a good DM would have would be that while he/she does control what goes on in the world, they should also keep their players in mind, and not go out of their way to give a party encounters that are way out of their means to overcome. That isn’t to say that occasional missteps that a party may make shouldn’t be included in a game. I mean, players are bound to sometimes wander into areas with creatures that are well beyond their own level, and it’s up to them to make a hasty retreat when they do so. Hopefully, without losing the entire party while doing so. A sense of humor is also important. I’m in a game right now where the DM is using an extension to display alternate, and often hilarious descriptions for monsters, rather than just goblin 1, gnoll 3, etc. There are a few other things as well, but I would like to get on with my list.
My DM Wish List
When I think about a DM that is creative, funny, and always gives his players something unexpected, my mind goes to the Digital Dungeon Master. Dave always has entertaining campaigns, whether he’s taking his players to Chult in the “Tomb of Annihilation,” or to Phandalin in the “Lost Mines of Phandelver.” I believe that being in a campaign that Dave was running would be one of endless entertainment and I think I’d always be flying by the seat of my pants.
This second DM is someone that I actually have had the privilege of being in a campaign with. That person is Fantasy Grounds College Founder Laerun. We actually started a campaign that was a homebrew that he had conceived, called “Fall of the Fey Lords.” He conceived a huge backstory, and we played a session 0 to see how we all meshed. It was a lot of fun. But, then real life stepped in, and with a party of seven, it became difficult to be able to play each week. After nine weeks and only three sessions together, we sadly disbanded, and thus the Fey Lords finally did fall. I hope that one day I will be able to play under Laerun again.
Now, I come to my final DM that I would love to play in a campaign with. The one goes under the “fat chance, Shel” That person is Mr. Christopher Perkins. Yes, THAT Chris Perkins, lead designer for Wizards of the Coast. Oh, and DM for the fabulous group the Waffle Crew in “Dice, Camera, Action.” I love how he treats his group. He doesn’t sugar coat things, and he is indeed a tough DM, but the way he weaves a story is incredible.
Well, that’s it for my dream list of DMs to play with. Do you have a DM that you especially admire and aspire to play under? Send Lady Shel an email and let me know. Also, you can email me with any topic suggestions you’d like to see me write about.
